For those of you who interact with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders, here is an easy and effective way of communicating what is coming up or what is expected: make a list. I do this ALL. DAY. LONG. My theory is that because the written word is more permanent, it’s easier for people with ASD to process and respond to it. It’s even effective for non-readers. Just read and review the list frequently, and allow the person to cross off each activity after it’s completed (who doesn’t love to do that?!).
